Software Engineer - Open Source Contributions

Contract · Remote

Annual Compensation Equivalent: $104,000–$208,000/year
Hourly Rate: $50–$100/hour

About the Role

This contract role is for experienced software engineers with strong open-source development skills and the ability to work effectively within established codebases.

You’ll contribute to an AI training project through hands-on software development, including feature implementation, complex bug resolution, code refactoring, performance optimization, code validation, and technical documentation. Prior AI experience is not required; the focus is on your software engineering expertise.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop, implement, and refine features within established open-source codebases.

  • Work across languages such as Python, Java, Rust, C++, and TypeScript.

  • Investigate and resolve complex bugs while maintaining project standards and code quality.

  • Refactor existing or legacy code to improve performance, readability, maintainability, and scalability.

  • Validate code and solutions for correctness, consistency, reliability, and adherence to established development practices.

  • Apply algorithms and competitive programming techniques to solve complex engineering problems efficiently.

  • Review proposed changes and collaborate remotely with other contributors.

  • Maintain and improve technical documentation associated with implementations and changes.

  • Produce clear technical write-ups explaining solution design, implementation decisions, and relevant trade-offs.

Requirements

  • Expert-level proficiency in at least two relevant programming languages, such as Python, C++, Java, Rust, TypeScript, Go, or C#.

  • Extensive practical experience contributing to open-source software.

  • Demonstrated experience with feature development, bug fixing, debugging, and codebase refactoring.

  • Strong understanding of algorithms and complex programming problem-solving.

  • Ability to analyze multifaceted technical requirements and identify effective solution approaches.

  • Strong code review and validation skills with close attention to correctness, maintainability, and performance.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical documentation and remote collaboration.

  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a distributed development environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant history of meaningful contributions to established open-source projects.

  • Experience working with large or unfamiliar codebases.

  • Strong competitive programming background.

  • Experience optimizing software for performance, scalability, or resource efficiency.

  • Experience working with multiple programming paradigms or technology stacks.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver well-documented, production-quality code within project timelines.

Who Should Apply

This role is suited to software engineers who enjoy working inside existing codebases rather than only building new applications from scratch. You should be comfortable understanding unfamiliar implementations, tracing complex issues, making targeted changes, and improving existing software without compromising established functionality.

Strong candidates should also be able to explain technical decisions clearly and work independently while collaborating with other contributors remotely.

Prior AI experience is not required.

Compensation & Engagement

  • Hourly rate: $50–$100/hour

  • Annual compensation equivalent: $104,000–$208,000

  • Annual equivalent is calculated at 40 hours per week × 52 weeks per year and is provided for comparison.

  • Compensation is output-based, with payment made per completed task that meets project specifications.

  • Time required per task may vary based on experience and individual workflow.

  • Minimum weekly submission requirements apply.

  • Actual earnings depend on completed tasks, applicable rates, and project availability.

Availability & Start Timeline

  • Remote contract position

  • Candidates should be ready to begin promptly.

  • Roles are typically filled within approximately 48 hours.

  • Selected candidates are expected to begin their first tasks within 24–48 hours after completing onboarding.
