Location: New York (Hybrid – 4 days/week in office)

Compensation: $85K–$125K + Competitive Equity

About the Role

We are seeking a Tax & Compliance Research Specialist to lead the setup and ongoing maintenance of our sales & use tax reporting and remission systems. You will be responsible for researching state-level tax requirements, implementing compliant processes, and supporting broader regulatory initiatives—including DMV compliance and operational policy research.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in fast-moving environments, enjoys deep research, and can build processes from the ground up.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and interpret sales & use tax requirements for vehicle sales across all 50 U.S. states.

  • Lead the setup, documentation, and execution of tax reporting and remission workflows.

  • Support audits, reconciliations, and continuous process improvements.

  • Maintain comprehensive records to support filings and future reviews.

  • Contribute to additional regulatory and operational research projects (e.g., DMV rules, compliance reviews).

Required Skills & Experience

  • 2–6 years experience in tax compliance, tax accounting, or similar roles.

  • Strong knowledge of sales & use tax requirements across multiple states.

  • Experience conducting tax research and interpreting state-level regulations.

  • Familiarity with tax automation tools; Vertex experience is strongly preferred.

  • Ability to work autonomously and take initiative on projects beyond core tax responsibilities.

  • Must be based in or willing to relocate to New York City.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with tax requirements related to vehicle or automotive sales.

  • Strong communication skills for cross-functional collaboration with finance, operations, and external partners.

  • Experience operating in fast-paced startup environments.
