MSW Intern
Daughters of Both Suns | Remote (based in Myrtle Beach, SC)
Unpaid MSW Field Placement | 15- 24 hours per week (Dependent on University)

About Daughters of Both Suns
Daughters of Both Suns is a 501(c)(3) trauma-informed mental health nonprofit based in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Our mission is to expand access to culturally responsive, trauma-informed mental health support for Black and Latina women while welcoming individuals from all backgrounds who value inclusive care. We serve families across Horry County and remotely nationwide, and we hold a 2026 Candid Gold Seal of Transparency.

Position Summary
MSW interns at Daughters of Both Suns serve as Resource Navigators. The first point of contact for individuals and families seeking support. This is a case-management and resource-navigation placement, not a clinical one. We do not provide psychotherapy or clinical services directly.

Interns engage clients, identify needs, connect individuals and families to community-based resources, document interactions, coordinate care, and follow up to ensure connections are actually made.

Core Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake and complete client onboarding, including welcome and orientation materials

  • Assign new clients to caseworkers and maintain accurate records

  • Provide resource navigation and referrals: housing and shelter, food access, legal aid, healthcare, mental health services, financial assistance, and other essential supports

  • Follow up with clients to confirm referrals were successful and barriers were addressed

  • Document all client interaction within 72 hours, including cases where the client did not respond, which are noted and closed out

  • Assist caseworkers with coordination of care and warm handoffs

  • Help build and maintain our statewide resource database

  • Participate in team meetings, training, and supervision

  • At later stages and with demonstrated consistency, opportunities in program development, outreach, community partnerships, and resource development

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an MSW program (foundational/generalist or advanced)

  • Work history that includes customer service experience: you will work directly with people in difficult moments, and comfort in that interaction is required

  • Adaptability: we are a growing grassroots organization; systems and processes change, sometimes quickly, and we need people who adjust without frustration

  • Ability to learn quickly: you'll absorb training on new platforms and workflows without needing repeated instruction

  • Initiative within scope: self-starters who act within their role rather than waiting to be directed

  • Your university must permit a task supervisor. If your program requires an MSW-credentialed field instructor or LCSW on site, we may not be able to accommodate the placement

  • Consistent weekly availability for client responsibilities, documentation, meetings, and follow-up

  • Empathy, cultural humility, professionalism, reliability, and a trauma-informed approach

Please note: We are unable to accept students from Walden University.

Expectations

  • Email checked at minimum every other day: this is not flexible

  • If you complete your required internship hours for the week, notify us so we can take over or keep eyes on a case with a responsive client or a crisis

  • Documentation completed within 72 hours, including non-responsive clients

  • Respect for our Program Manager, Ana Matos, and the direction she assigns

  • Willingness to receive constructive feedback and demonstrate accountability and ownership

What You'll Gain
Hands-on case management experience, direct client engagement with individuals and families from diverse backgrounds, exposure to trauma-informed practice, professional boundaries, care coordination, and community-based social work, plus mentorship, weekly goal-setting, and a team invested in your professional growth.

How to Apply
Send your résumé, your university's field education and supervision requirements, and your learning agreement (if available) to [email protected].

Please include your placement start and end dates, total hours required, expected weekly hours, and confirmation of whether your university allows a task supervisor.
